CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – A new recreation center in Conway could break ground ahead of schedule.
On Wednesday, crews were clearing the ground along Mill Pond Road, which is where the facility will be built.
Foster Hughes, director of Parks and Recreation in Conway, said they could break ground in May. The original plan was to start digging up dirt in July.
Architects are also drawing up plans, while the Parks and Recreation Department waits for a permit to be approved for the $5.1 million center.
People in Conway have been waiting a long time for a recreation center in their city.
"I think it's fabulous," Donna Catton-Johnson said. "Conway has always been the county seat but it's been kind of like the stepchild and it's about time that we have own facility and not have to go to the beach, especially for the people who live in Loris and Aynor."
"I grew up in Conway. I went to school in Conway and I just think it will be a great thing for people to be able to take the kids out and have positive things for kids to do," resident Tracy McCray added.
The center will bring over a dozen jobs to the area and have an indoor swimming pool, two basketball courts, an indoor track and weight and aerobic rooms.
Construction on the project should take about a year.
