Traffic stop leads to federal drugs, weapons charges

Columbia, SC - COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - A Columbia man is facing federal drugs and weapons charges after a routine traffic stop in Clarendon County.

According to acting U.S. Attorney Kevin F. McDonald, Bruce Lee Barrett, 46, was charged Wednesday in a four-count indictment for possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of a stolen weapon, possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of a weapon during the commission of a drug trafficking crime.

Investigators say they stopped Barrett near Sardinia in January and found the drugs and a loaded, stolen handgun in his vehicle.

If convicted, Barrett faced up to $1 million in fines and life in prison.
