Florence doctor gets probation, restitution for tax fraud

Columbia, SC - COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - A Florence emergency room doctor was sentenced Wednesday for tax fraud.

U.S. District Judge R. Bryan Harwell sentenced Dr. Peter J. Zavell, 47, to five years probation for making and subscribing to a false tax return. The first two years of his sentence, Zavell will serve on home detention. Harwell also ordered Zavell to perform 80 hours of community service, half of which should be to completed at the Mercy Medical Clinic.

According to acting U.S. Attorney Kevin F. McDonald, from 1999 through 2002, Zavell used Anderson's Ark and Associates (AAA), an out-of-state organization promoting fraudulent tax avoidance strategies for its members. Over the three year period, Zavell filed tax returns with the IR reporting false partnership losses and false expenses to eliminate his tax liabilities, totaling more than $244,000 in tax losses to the IRS.

In addition to probation and community service, Zavell will repay the $244,000 in full to the U.S. Treasury at $4,000 per month.
