Lake City, SC - FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - A Lake City High School teacher has been terminated by Florence County School District 3 officials Tuesday following an investigation into an inappropriate relationship with a student.
Officials said in an official press release Tuesday the relationship occurred off of school grounds. Officials have no indication that the inappropriate behavior or relationship occurred during normal school hours.
Allegations of the relationship surfaced after school officials learned of the exchange of text messages between the student and teacher.
Law enforcement entered the investigation after the teacher, who remains unidentified, confessed to the relationship. In accordance to state law, the district has notified the South Carolina Department of Education.
Officials note the teacher has a clean record with the school district, clear of any disciplinary action while employed. Prior to offering a contract to the teacher, district officials say a background check revealed no criminal convictions, concerns or red flags.
The district says it will comment no further on the circumstances of the investigation or the nature of the text messages exchanged.
