Details released into deadly police chase, accident

Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Horry County Police are releasing more details Wednesday into a brief police chase that killed one person on McCormick Road late Tuesday morning.

An Horry County police officer reports attempting to pull over a Mitsubishi Galant for failing to use a proper turn signal after patrolling a mobile home park in the area of Highway 814. The driver of the car pulled into a Kangaroo gas station on the corner of Forestbrook Road and failed to stop for the officer's flashing lights and sirens.

A report obtained from Horry County Police reveals the officer pursued the car down Forestbrook Road until the car made a hard right-hand turn onto McCormick Road and appeared to run off of the side of the road. The pursuing officer says the driver managed to regain control of the car before making an improper pass and colliding with a black SUV just after 11:15 a.m. Tuesday.

"The SUV collided with him almost directly head-on," the officer wrote. "I saw the rear end of the car go airborne and to the left, landing in the grass close to a ditch."

Horry County Coroner Robert Edge said Lucero Sanchez Martinez, who was a passenger in the Galant, died shortly after noon at Conway Medical Center.

The driver of the Expedition was taken to a local hospital in an unknown condition.
