Flames nab Big South Athlete of the Week honors

Charlotte, NC - CHARLOTTE, NC – Liberty's Clarence Powell has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week, while Lady Flame Jaime Watson was tabbed the Women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the League announced Wednesday.

Powell, a junior from Marianna, Fla., took first place in the triple jump with a mark of 50' 1.75" at the Merrill Lynch Classic over the weekend.  He also took second in the high jump with a leap of 6' 10.75".  Powell's triple jump mark currently ranks No. 1 in the Big South and is 35th nationally, while his high jump height is ranked No. 2 in the League and 37th in the country.

Watson, a redshirt senior from Ravenna, Mich., broke an 18 year-old Liberty record as she took home first place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.12 over the weekend.  Her time took over the top spot in the Conference and is good for No. 31 nationally.

Honorable mentions for the men included Felix Kitur of VMI and Josh Morgan of High Point.  Kitur set a Lou Onesty Invitational meet record with a time of 1:49.66 to win the 800-meters at the University of Virginia.  His time is tops in the Big South, 10th in the East Region and is No. 22 nationally.

Morgan posted a personal-best time of 3:46.13 in the 1,500-meter event to take over the No. 1 position in the League at the UNC Invitational weekend.

The women's honorable mentions included Winthrop's Rebecca Holmes.  Holmes took home first-place on her home track in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.87.  She then helped her 4x400-meter relay team set a school and track record as they posted a time of 3:45.16 to win the event by more than 23 seconds.  Their mark is currently tops in the Big South in the event.
