Leaders look to regulate parasailing in MB

Myrtle Beach, SC - MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The Myrtle Beach City Council is eyeing up a possible first reading of an ordinance that would allow local leaders to regulate parasailing activities in Myrtle Beach.

Discussion of the proposed ordinance arose at a Tuesday morning Myrtle Beach City Council Workshop, as leaders cited a deadly 2009 North Carolina parasailing accident as a main concern for updating regulations.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, two women died on Aug. 28, 2009 after the rope that connected their parasail to a boat disconnected in Ocean Isle, NC. The Ocean Isle Beach Medical Examiner's Office says Cynthia Woodcock and Lorrie Shoup died from blunt force trauma in the accident.

The U.S. Coast Guard later tested the equipment involved in the deadly accident to learn more about how and why the accident occurred.
