Brief police chase turns deadly in Horry County

Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - One person is dead following a short police chase in Horry County late Tuesday morning, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

SCHP spokesman Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins says the accident occurred shortly after 11:15 a.m. on McCormick Road as a Mitsubishi Galant was attempting to elude Horry County Police during a traffic stop. The driver of the Galant made an improper pass around a vehicle on McCormick Road, and as a result, struck a Ford Expedition head-on.

Horry County Coroner Robert Edge said Lucero Sanchez Martinez, who was a passenger in the Galant, died shortly after noon at Conway Medical Center.

The driver of the Expedition was taken to a local hospital in an unknown condition.

McCormick Road in the area of Forestbrook Road remains closed to traffic as South Carolina Highway Patrol investigators attempt to re-create and investigate the accident.

Horry County Police have not released information on the circumstances that prompted the deadly chase.
