SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, SC (AP) - Pilots from Shaw Air Force Base in central South Carolina are beginning several weeks of nighttime training.
The flights by the F-16 pilots begin Monday and are taking place so that they can train with special night vision equipment.
Air Force officials say the pilots also will practice tactics that help them learn how to maneuver in the dark and survive during combat.
Officials say the nighttime takeoffs and landings may be heard by residents in central South Carolina throughout the month of April.
F-16 crews fly close air support missions to protect Army, Navy and Marine Corps units on the ground.
