Patriot Netters split with Division I Bulldogs

ORANGEBURG, SC – The 13th-ranked Francis Marion University women's tennis team defeated NCAA Division I opponent South Carolina State University 5-2 on Saturday afternoon (April10), while the 13th-ranked Patriot men dropped a 6-1 decision to the Bulldogs.

The match was scored by NCAA Division I rules with the team winning the majority of the three doubles matches gaining one point and each singles match counting as one point.

The Patriot women (14-3) won the No.1 and 2 doubles matches and then claimed the top four singles matches.

The FMU men (9-5) lost a tight 8-6 decision at No. 1 doubles and dropped the No.3 doubles contest 8-4.

The only singles victory for Francis Marion was by top-ranked and unbeaten Dilshod Sharifi 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 1 position, although three of the singles losses for the Patriots were in three sets.  Sharifi runs his season mark to 13-0 and career record to 52-3.

Both Francis Marion teams will play host to top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University (women are 23-0, men 23-1) on Monday at 2 p.m. on the Kassab Courts.
