Weaver accepts 1-year contract as County Administrator

Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - After months of interviews and a number of tie votes, Horry County has a new county administrator - the same man who has been holding the job down for the past year.

The council decided during a meeting Friday morning to offer a one-year contract to John Weaver, who has been serving the county as interim administrator since former County Administrator Danny Knight resigned in May 2009. The contract hires Weaver as the county's full-time administrator at current salary, which is $165,400, according to County spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier. The contract has an automatic one-year extension, unless council members disapprove.

Weaver accepted the terms of the contract.

Weaver, who is also the county's lead attorney, has been pulling double duty since taking over as interim country administrator. Bourcier said council members did not discuss when Weaver would take over full-time as administrator and leave the attorney's office; however, as county administrator, Weaver will be charge of that office, and it will be his decision whether to hire another attorney or appoint another lead attorney, Bourcier noted.

Horry County Council was supposed to choose a permanent county administrator on Tuesday, but council members were unable to determine who that person would be. Council members said they supported Weaver becoming the permanent administrator, but had concerns over his salary and length of contract.

Council unanimously passed a motion to draft a contract, and if he accepted the contract, he accepts the job on council's terms.
