SURFSIDE BEACH,SC (WMBF) – Two dog parks are currently under construction near First Avenue North in Surfside Beach and not everyone's happy about the projects.
"I've had a lot of people come to my house and ask 'What are they doing next door?'" resident Mary Moss said.
She can see the pet waste box right outside of her window, and while some may think it will be a fun place for their pets, Moss is concerned.
"I think there's going to be an odor issue, a cleanliness issue, and an issue with possibly fleas and ticks," she said.
Randel Stevens lives next door and is worried that what dogs leave behind will end up in nearby lakes and run-off drains. The areas that could be affected are areas not recommended for swimming by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.
"We're basically polluting the beach," Stevens said.
Surfside Beach Town Administrator Ed Booth disagrees and says not only did DHEC approve the plan, but the grass that's being laid will absorb most of the runoff.
"It just looks like random fencing," Moss said.
Booth also adds public works crews will be there daily making sure all waste is removed.
"I don't think it will ever get done. They always say they'll do it and never do it," Stevens said.
He hopes that's not the case, and so do a lot of his neighbors.
