California leaders deal with homosexuality law

(NBC) - California assembly leaders are looking to remove a 50-year-old state law that seeks to "cure" homosexuality.

Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal said according to Section 5050 of the Welfare and Institutions Code, the law orders the State Department of Mental Health to study cures for homosexuality.

The law states, "The State Department of Mental Health shall plan, conduct and cause to be conducted scientific research into the causes and cures of sexual deviation. This included deviations conductive to sex crimes against children and the causes and cures of homosexuality."

"It's time to strip the vestige of institutional bigotry from California's code books," Lowenthal said.

The lawmaker recently introduced a bill and hopes the current wording will be deleted by the governor.

The original laws went into effect in 1950 after a string of sex crimes by child molesters fueled lawmakers to pass legislation.
