Charleston Southern, Winthrop athletes win Big South awards

Charlotte, NC - From the Big South Conference:

CHARLOTTE, NC - Charleston Southern's Marija Dzakovic has been named the Big South Choice Hotels Women's Tennis player of the week, while Winthrop's Giovanna Portiolli has been named The Crons Brand Freshman of the week for matches played March 29-April 4, it was announced by the Conference office.

Dzakovic, a sophomore from Belgrade, Serbia, finished with an undefeated 6-0 mark in singles and doubles actions last week.  She was teamed up with Olga Makjova for a perfect 3-0 week at No. 2 doubles as they posted a combined 24-12 score.

Dzakovic also had a phenomenal week at No.3 singles.  It began by taking down CCU's Kim Webb, 6-2,6-2.  She then coasted past Wofford's Stephanie Cox, 6-0,6-1.

Dzakovic and Radford's Petra Dajevic had an exciting opening set, which was eventually won when Dzakovic broke serve to take the set, 7-5, and the road that momentum to win the second set, 6-2.

Winthrop's Portiolli who is a freshman from Curitiba, Brazil, set a record of two singles and two doubles wins at the No. 4 spot.  This lead Winthrop to two Big South wins in the past week.   When played against Gardner-Webb, she defeated Ronia Hutterli in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 and later downed Britney Cloer from UNC, Asheville, 6-3, 6-0.

With the two doubles victories last week, Portiolli and her partner Sandra Herrera pushed their Conference doubles record to a perfect 4-0.
