Florence, SC - FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Nearly 5,000 youth die each year across the U.S. from underage drinking incidents, and this spring, the Florence County Sheriff's Office is teaming up with the 12th Judicial Circuit Alcohol Enforcement Team to keep teens away from alcohol in the Pee Dee.
The "Out of Their Hands" enforcement effort is designed by local and state law enforcement to reduce the availability of alcohol to teenagers during the Spring Break and prom seasons. Through April 11, undercover officers will be conducting compliance checks with businesses that serve alcohol throughout Florence County, in addition to a number of traffic checkpoints.
"From arrest and jail to loss of scholarship opportunities, the consequences of underage drinking can be tragic," Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone said.
Between 2006 and 2008 in South Carolina, 158 people were killed in alcohol-related traffic crashes involving an underage driver under the influence.
