Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - It's a position that has drawn an array of opinions from members of the Horry County Council, but leaders say they hope to make a decision on who will be the next county administrator at a meeting on Tuesday.
The Horry County Council has embarked on two previous searches to fill the position, both of which have been spearheaded by The Mercer Group, an executive search team hired by Horry County to conduct the search.
At the start of the county's latest search attempt, three candidates - current Horry County Administrator John Weaver, former Oconee County Administrator Dale Surrett and Al Green - were frontrunners for the position.
Green, the current county manager for Union County, NC, withdrew from the race for personal reasons on Feb. 19.
Both Weaver and Surrett have proceeded through two separate interviews with members of the Horry County Council - the very people they'll report to on the county's current state on a daily basis. The two candidates agreed on many issues, ranging from infrastructure and crime, but differed on the contractual stipulations of the position.
Weaver, who is currently contracted as the county administrator, said he would not accept the position without an offered contract. Surrett, however, said he could do without the contract and simply work from a day-to-day basis with the county.
Weaver's contract as Horry County's interim administrator was extended March 1 for an additional 90 days after leaders could not come out of a 6-6 vote deadlock on who would fill the position.
Horry County spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier says when an administrator is hired, Weaver's position as interim administrator will conclude.
