Bullying has received a lot of attention the past week due to the tragic death of Phoebe Prince, a 15-year-old Massachusetts student who committed suicide when the bullying became more than she could handle.
And now several students have been charged with in the case as the DA's investigation revealed relentless activity directed toward Phoebe designed to humiliate her and to make it impossible for her to remain at school. The investigation also looked at whether the adults' failure to help Phoebe amounted to criminal behavior. And the decision by the DA was they did not rise to that level, but the actions - or inactions - of some adults at the school are troublesome.
Consider This: This should be a wakeup call for all students, parents, teachers, school officials and law enforcement. This type of behavior is unacceptable. Yes, the children are responsible for their actions, but it is also the responsibility of the parents, teachers, school administrators and any adults who are aware of the bullying to step up and make sure it is stopped. How can an adult, especially a parent, allow, and sometimes encourage, this type of activity?
