KANNAPOLIS, NC – Freshman Kenneth Svanum fired a final-round 72 to help Francis Marion University move up two positions to finish ninth at the 13th-annual Irish Creek Collegiate Golf Tournament.
The 54-hole event was sponsored by the Charlotte Sports Commission, the Charlotte 49ers, and Davidson and Belmont Abbey colleges, and was played at the par 71, 7099-yard The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C.
Charlotte won the team title with an 842 score, besting second-place Ohio State University by 11 strokes. Kennesaw State University (861), Mercer University (863), and Marquette University (868) rounded out the top five. After shooting identical 298 rounds on Saturday, Francis Marion registered a 295 team score on Sunday to finish at 891.
Senior Christopher Couch was the top Patriot finisher as he tied for 21st position at 70-75-74=219. The Summerville native parred 38 of his 54 holes. Svanum (78-73-72=223) and senior Matt Jackson (74-75-74=223) tied for the 36th spot, while Sebastian Backlund (76-75-75=226) tied for 46th, and Travis Gantt (79-75-85=239) placed 62nd.
The Patriots will conclude their 2009-2010 schedule on April 24-25 at the Rutherford IntercollegiateTournament in State College, Pa.
