Cobras claim third consecutive Carolina Sands Championship

ELIZABETHTOWN, N.C. - After posting a blistering 281 on day one of the 2010 Carolina Sands Intercollegiate the Coker College Cobras shot a 285 to win the tournament for the third year in a row, winning by 11 strokes over host-UNCP on Saturday morning at the par-72, 6,925-yard Carolina Sands Golf Course at White Lake.

The Braves put up rounds of 287 and 290 to finish second at 577. St. Andrews Presbyterian College finished third (294-294-588), Mount Olive College finished fourth (297-296-593) and Lindenwood University finished fifth (298-299-597) to round out the top-five at the event.

Coker's Chris Marsh (Georgetown, S.C.) shot a three-under-par 69 to go along with the 71 he shot on Friday to win the event by one stroke at 141. Marsh won the tournament last year in a playoff after posting a 138 over two rounds. Fellow Cobra Jake Murphy (Hamilton, N.J.) (69-72) finished tied for second with St. Andrews' Thorudur Gissurarson (71-70) at 141.

UNCP's Carson Lanier (73-69) tied for fourth with Coker's Jared Crane (Greer, S.C.) (70-72) at 142.

Rounding out the field for Coker was Jay Goldenberg (Toronto, Ontario) (72-72 with a 144 tying him for eighth place and Ben Conroy (Durham, Conn.) (71-74) at 145, placing him in a tie for 11th place.

The win for Coker marks the third year in a row that the Cobras have won the Carolina Sands team title, while also marking the third consecutive year that a Coker golfer won the individual tournament title. Two years ago Trey Bridwell won medalist honors, winning the tournament on a one-hole playoff.

Coker's next tournament will be a big one for the Cobras, as they hit the links for the Conference Carolinas Championship in Clemmons, N.C. on April 18-20.
