Dog sledding ... without the snow

(NBC) - Most families look for something they can all enjoy and do together.

One Kentucky family has found the perfect activity that gets them outside and working together.

It's something you would normally picture taking place in Alaska. A four person cart is perfect for the Blewett family - Jordan, Jacob, and Jeff. However, they aren't the muscle behind their machine – they're leaving that to the dogs.

"We're the fastest dog sledding team in Western Kentucky, but we're the only dog sledding team in Western Kentucky," Jeff Blewett said. "A husky pulls, that's just what they do. They are genetically engineered to do that and that's what they love to do."

Their family of dogs runs on gravel trails, pulling the cart behind.

"Snow just gets in our way," Blewett said.

According to Jeff, this sport of dry land sledding is increasing in popularity. His family has been doing it for over 20 years.

They get out every weekend they can to enjoy the outdoors, one another's company and give the dogs a workout.
