Drug, weapon sweep leads to arrest of 11 CCU students

Conway, SC - CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - Eleven Coastal Carolina University students are behind bars as the result of a surprise illegal drug and weapon sweep by campus security on Thursday.

Local law enforcement agencies assisted Coastal Carolina in "Operation Safe Campus," a surprise sweep initiated in 2008 to improve safety and crime at the university.

Seven dog teams searched through common living areas and parking lots of campus residence halls, resulting in the discovery of drug paraphernalia and a small amount of marijuana.

"Students and parents should know that Coastal Carolina University has a zero tolerance policy for drugs and weapons, and we will be continue to be vigilant in making this campus safe," said University President David A. DeCenzo.

Operation Safe Campus is directed by the Coastal Carolina University Department of Public Safety in cooperation with the Horry County Police Department, Conway Police Department, North Myrtle Beach Police Department, the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office and the 15th Circuit Solicitor's Office.
