MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The CareTeam is hoping to have a big night of fundraising in April at its largest event of the year.
CareTeam is planning the "Dining with Friends" fundraiser for April 24 and is looking for people to attend dinner parties and donate to the organization.
CareTeam Executive Director Johanna Haynes says so far this year, they've seen an increase in demand for their services. She says in 2010, they've helped 30 new clients, compared to last year where they saw 68 new clients for the whole year.
She says she may have to help more people if the state cuts funding of the drug program from $5.6 million to $2.2 million.
"That program started a waiting list on March 15, and what that means is there'll be delays in people getting treatment getting medications from them. They either won't have the medications or CareTeam will have to pay for them," said Haynes. "So what's going to happen is CareTeam is going to have to pick up that, and we're going to have a hard time doing that if the numbers continue they way they have the first two months of the year."
One client of CareTeam says he started using their services in 1998, after he exhausted all his money pay for medication. He says he simply couldn't afford to live spending upwards of $2,000 on medication.
"On what I have with Social Security, it would not be enough to pay. It would be a matter of medications and then it wouldn't be enough to cover it, or starving," said the man, who didn't want to be identified.
The "Dining with Friends" night will help get victims the medication they need and help pay for other expenses they may have. For more information on the event, call CareTeam at (843) 236-9000.
