MD woman killed on I-95; may have fallen asleep at wheel

Timmonsville, SC - TIMMONSVILLE, SC (WMBF) - One person was killed and another injured in a crash on Interstate 95 in Florence County late Wednesday morning.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 11:20 a.m. on northbound I-95 between the 153 and 154 mile markers between Timmonsville and Hollman Crossroads. SCHP officials say a 1993 Honda Accord was southbound on I-95 and crossed through the median, striking a 1999 Chevy van.

Florence County Coroner Bubba Matthews identified the victim as Geraldine Sheppard Wilson, 65, of Essex, MD. Matthews said she was traveling to Georgia in a separate vehicle behind her husband, who was pulling a rented trailer. He said he noticed his wife was not behind him and turned around and saw his wife's vehicle involved in the crash.

Matthews said Wilson's 1993 Honda Accord veered off the southbound lane, across the media and into northbound traffic and struck a 1999 Chevy van. Her husband told authorities they had not slept much the night before, and she may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Wilson was wearing a seatbelt.

Emergency crews transported the driver of the van, a Raleigh, NC man, to McLeod Hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.
