Hartsville, SC - HARTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) – A loud sound coming from the H.B. Robinson Nuclear Plant has caused concern for those working and living around the plant, but officials say not to be alarmed.
H.B. Robinson Nuclear Plant was closed down Sunday, and as part of its shutdown procedure, workers released pressurized steam from generators for a lengthy period of time. The loud sound of the released steam has sparked numerous calls to the Darlington County Sheriff's Office.
The steam, according to plant officials, is not hazardous to the atmosphere and is a normal part of operations. They say the practice is critical to safely shutting down the plant for maintenance operations.
Officials with the plant say the steam release is expected to last until Tuesday afternoon, but may last longer.
