U.S. Department of State considers passport price hike

(NBC) - The U.S. Department of State is looking at raising the fees in the coming months between 35 and 75 percent.

According to the proposal, renewals would increase from $75 to $110, and new passports would increase $100 to $135.

The U.S. Department of State says the increase is needed to cover the cost of processing and printing passports.

American citizens traveling by car to and from Canada or Mexico are required to present a passport book or card.

Any U.S. citizen traveling overseas by air must present a passport book to show proof of identity and citizenship.
