Fire collapses beach house in Pawleys Island

Pawleys Island, SC - PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WMBF) - A late afternoon fire has destroyed an elevated beach house in Pawleys Island.

Chief Eggiman with Midway Fire Rescue says firefighters were dispatched to 16 Old Tram Way in the Waterford Heights area of Pawleys Island after reports of a fully-involved house fire. Officials say the fire was discovered when the homeowner heard a crackling sound upstairs and called 911.

Upon arrival, firefighters found flames shooting through the roof of the roughly 3,000-square foot house, threatening nearby trees and homes. An estimated 20 firefighters executed a defensive operation to keep the threat of flames spreading to nearby homes and trees at a minimum.

Fire officials say the blaze is believed to be under control and is not posing an immediate threat to other homes. Santee Cooper has assisted with the department's efforts by turning off power to the affected house.

No injuries were reported in the incident. Fire investigators are still working to pinpoint what sparked the large blaze.
