CHARLOTTE, NC – High Point's Matt Gantner has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels baseball Player of the Week, while Tyler Thornburg from Charleston Southern was tabbed The CRONS Brand Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games played March 22-28, it was announced Monday by the League office.
Gantner, a senior from Hartland, Wis., batted .611 with 11 hits and eight RBI to lead the Panthers to a 3-2 record on the week, including a win over ACC foe Wake Forest and a Big South series win over Winthrop. He posted a hit in every game he played in and notched four mulit-hit games. Gantner highlighted his week with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate with three RBI, a home run and three runs scored in the game one win over Winthrop on March 27. Gantner closed out his week with an .889 slugging percentage and a .652 on base percentage in the five-game span.
Thornburg, a junior from Atlanta, Ga., posted a career-high 11 strikeouts in eight scoreless innings of work to pick up the win over No. 28 VMI on March 27. The right-hander kept his no-hitter going through the fifth inning as he allowed just two hits on the afternoon. Thornburg retired the VMI side in order in the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th innings. He finished his outing with 125 pitches on the day, 82 for strikes.
