Area officers, agencies honored for DUI enforcement efforts

Columbia, SC - COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - The South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) recognized numerous law enforcement officers and agencies for their efforts to rid South Carolina roadways of drunken drivers, including several from the Grand Strand and Pee Dee.

Senior Master Patrol officer Josh Scott of the Conway Police and Patrolman 1st Class Pete Schmidt of the Myrtle Beach Police were honored as Officers of the Year, and the Conway Police Department, led by Chief Reggie Godnell, was awarded the Agency of the Year for its size.

SCHP Trooper 1st Class Douglas J. Sarvis of Troop 5 (which covers Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Georgetown, Horry, Marion, Marlboro and Williamsburg counties, was named the Highway Patrol Trooper of the Year; Troop 5 was named Troop of the Year.

The 15th Circuit (Horry and Georgetown counties) earned Law Enforcement Network honors.

In addition, six area officers were recognized as DUI Heroes in bronze, silver and gold categories for their DUI arrest records in 2009. They are:

  • Patrol Officer Justin Strickland, Conway Police Department, Bronze (20 DUI arrests)
  • Sgt. Kenny Polson, Marlboro County Sheriff's Office, Silver (25 DUI arrests)
  • Senior Master Patrol Officer Chad Causey, Conway Police Department, Gold (60 DUI arrests)
  • Lance Cpl. Jack Johnson, Jr., Horry County Police Department, Gold (57 DUI arrests)
  • Patrolman 1st Class Pete Schmidt, Myrtle Beach Police Department, Gold (139 DUI arrests )
  • Senior Master Patrol Officer Josh Scott, Conway Police Department, Gold (74 DUI arrests)

The keynote speaker for the fifth annual DUI Enforcement Recognition Ceremony was State Senator Joel Lourie. The event, held at Seawell's in Columbia, drew more than 300 law enforcement officials and highway safety advocates from across the state.

Mark Keel, director of SCDPS, said the event illustrates the commitment the Highway Patrol, State Transport Police and local law enforcement agencies have toward DUI enforcement.

"DUI enforcement is more than just writing tickets and hauling drunk drivers off to jail," Keel said. "DUI enforcement is really about saving lives. People who drive drunk are road hazards who can kill someone at any moment. But strong DUI enforcement is an effective tool to combat this violent crime. The officers recognized exemplify the best of the best in DUI enforcement."

Officer of the Year (five categories based on size of agency):

  • Patrolman David Fazzone, Williamston Police Department (10 officers or less)
  • Lt. Joseph M. Ginn, Ridgeland Police Department (11-25 officers)
  • Patrolman 1st Class Charles E. Carnes, Hanahan Police Department (26-50 officers)
  • Senior Master Patrol Officer Josh Scott, Conway Police Department (51-100 officers)
  • Patrolman 1st Class Pete Schmidt, Myrtle Beach Police Department (101 or more officers)

Rookie of the Year: Patrolman 1st Class Jonathan C. Evans, North Charleston Police Department

Agency of the Year (five categories based on size of agency):

  • St. George Police Department, Chief Anthony Britt (10 officers or less)
  • Travelers Rest Police Department, Chief Lance Crowe (11-25 officers)
  • Mauldin Police Department, Captain Roger Tripp (26-50 officers)
  • Conway Police Department, Chief Reggie Gosnell (51-100 officers)
  • Charleston Police Department, Chief Gregory G. Mullen (101 or more officers)
