COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina won 15 at the Weems Baskin Invitational Saturday to cap a strong home meet that featured 17 teams from the region.
WOMEN'S TEAM The Gamecock women sprinters enjoyed a strong day with numerous top five finishers in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m dashes. In the 100m, junior Gabrielle Glenn won the event at 11.47, followed by freshman Tatianna Fisher in second at 11.57 and junior LaKya Brookins in fourth at 11.62. Glenn then led the Gamecocks in a 2-3-4 finish in the 200m with a second place finish at 23.65. Sophomore Kelsey McCorkle placed third at a personal best 23.83, and Fisher claimed fourth at 23.96. Freshman Sierra Henderson won the 800m at 2:15.06, and junior Nadonnia Rodrigues took second in the event at 2:15.24. Junior Porche Byrd placed third in the 400m dash at 55.99.
South Carolina swept the hurdle events as KeKe Clarke claimed the 100-meter hurdle crown and Radiance Basden claimed the 400- meter hurdle crown. Clarke ran 13.86 in the 100-meter hurdles, and Basden ran 1:01.65 in the 400-meter hurdles. The Gamecocks also won the relays with a time of 44.64 in the 4x100m relay and a time of 3:47.26 in the 4x400m relay. The 4x100m was run by Brookins, Glenn, Shayla Mahan and Breehana Jacobs; the 4x400m relay was run by Byrd, Glenn, Rodrigues and Jacobs.
Moving to the middle distances, sophomore Beatrice Biwott placed third in the 1500m run at 4:46.11, and Nicole Rheinlander placed fifth in the 5000m run at 19:05.99.
In the women's field events, school record holder Vica Shobe earned the win at 4.00m, and sophomore Allie Nicosia took third at 3.75m. Junior Kayla Blake claimed third in the high jump at 1.65m, and Aimee Kodat placed second in the discus at 43.74m.
MEN'S TEAM On the men's side, Booker Nunley and Johnny Dutch led a 1-2 collegiate finish in the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles. Nunley took first in the 110-meter hurdles at 13.59 with Dutch coming in at 13.78; Dutch then ran away from the competition in the 400-meter hurdles at 50.41 with Nunley running 55.68.
