NORTH MYRTLE BEACH (WMBF) - North Myrtle Beach hosted a community census celebration Saturday.
The free event featured games, prizes, face painting, a kids' area with inflatables, and entertainment by local dance and martial arts groups. The event also gave residents the opportunity to ask questions about the 2010 census to census workers
Vermelle Simmons with the U.S. Census says this kind of an event is a great way to get the whole family out and spread the word about the Census.
"Often times word of mouth really doesn't travel as fast as we like," Simmons said. "So when you do this event you get to touch more ears."
As of Saturday, the national census form return rate sat at 34 percent. In Horry County, the response rate lagged at 29 percent.
More than 130 questionnaire centers have been set up along the Grand Strand for residents who have questions about their 2010 census forms.
Horry County's centers will be open through April 19 in locations ranging from gas stations and grocery stores to libraries and other public buildings.
