Latta, SC - LATTA, SC (WMBF) - A former mayor of Latta accused of defrauding the Social Security Administration and an insurance company has been found guilty in federal court Friday.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Day says Alan L. Berry faces 60 counts of defrauding the Social Security Administration and defrauding the Hartford Insurance Company. Investigators accused Berry of making false statements to both parties to obtain disability payments.
Berry told officials he was unable to work as he served the town of Latta as its mayor. Berry also occupied a position at a fast-tax service, where he helped to prepare taxes.
The former mayor managed to gather $300,000 from both the Social Security Administration and the Hartford Insurance Company before his criminal act was uncovered. Berry's sentencing will come at a later date.
Shiela Berry, the mayor's ex-wife, was found not guilty on the same 60 charges.
