PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WMBF) – Waccamaw High School opened last season with an 11-1 record en route to a state-runner up finish in Class 2A. This year, they've started 12-0 and hope they will finish with a state championship.
That may depend on their pair of ace pitchers, Ashley Czechner and Ashley Brown.
Czechner is a well-known force, leading the Warriors last year as well. She may well finish her career with over 1,000 strikeouts. Opponents know this as well, and she often sees the same expression on batters when she stands in the circle.
"Fear," said Czechner, who is committed to play for the University of Maryland. "That and they're not that confident because they know I strike out a lot of people a game."
New this year is pitcher Ashley Brown. She transferred to Waccamaw from St. James after moving, providing the Warriors with a powerful 1-2 pitching punch.
"[Having two good pitchers] is very rare," said Brown. "Usually you'll have one good pitcher and another backup one, it's nice to know if I'm not on my a game I can have another pitcher come in that I can rely on a lot."
The Warriors, who fell in the state championship game last year to Crescent, are confident their pitching tandem has them poised for another deep playoff run this season.
"We find ourselves incredibly lucky to have both of them," said second baseman Nikki Legg. "Ashley and Ashley are just so great. We rely on them to throw a great game; we're there to back them up."
