Socastee ESL teacher takes home statewide honor

Myrtle Beach, SC - CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - A teacher at the Socastee Adult Education Center beat out 80 peers to take home the honor of the 2010 South Carolina Adult Education ESL Teacher of the Year.

The award, presented to Kathy Mishoe, was announced at the 2nd Annual Adult Education ESL Conference in Columbia on March 12. More than 80 ESL teachers were nominated for the award, one from each district in South Carolina.

Mishoe has taught for 33 years and holds certifications in general science, biology, social studies, and middle school science and social studies. Her ESL students come from around the world, including Russia, Turkey, Colombia, Korea, Brazil and Uzbekistan.

In addition to helping her students learn English and prepare for their citizenship exam, Mishoe also helps her students get library cards, complete tax returns and increases their knowledge of computers and technology.

"[Mishoe] always goes the extra mile for her students. She is knowledgeable and caring, appreciated by all her peers, and consistently positive in her approach to teaching," said Adult Education Director Dr. Virginia G. Simmons.

Tammy Humphreys, an ESL teacher at the North Myrtle Beach Adult Education Center, received the award at last year's inaugural presentation.

ESL classes are offered at the Conway, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach and Socastee Adult Education Centers. Classes are available mornings and evenings for adult students age 18
