$200K falls out of armored vehicle

Whitehall, OH - (NBC) - A bag of money spills out of an armored vehicle, and a police sergeant says it's not a "finders-keepers" situation.

The incident happened at about 8:18 a.m. in Whitehall, OH. A bag of money spilled out of a Garda armored vehicle. Officials estimated that more than $200,000 was in the bag.

A vehicle behind the armored vehicle drove over the bag, and it ruptured. Cash spilled on the roadway when the bag broke apart. Apparently, the armored vehicle driver didn't realize the bag spilled out the vehicle.

David Sedlick witnessed the incident. He said he was the one who called 911 to report the money and the "frenzy."

"There were literally cars, you know, at every random pattern—parked all over the road. People standing everywhere. People were putting money in their pockets. You know, stuffing it. There was one large bag that was like half a brick of money. Some guy was holding that. Money was just falling out of it. People were like dazed and confused, looking around. It was a very kind of surreal atmosphere," Sedlick said.

Authorities were able to recover some of the money. As of 6 p.m., more than $100,000 is still missing.

Others were encouraged to drop the found money at the Whitehall police department, 365 S. Yearling Rd., Columbus.

"If they come in and turn in the money to us, and get here very quickly, and they turn in everything they found, that goes an awful long way when we start considering. We've actually had people turn in the money so far. No one has been charged yet," Whitehall Sgt. Dan Kelso said.

Kelso said three or four people turned in found money totaling $9,000 Wednesday.

A witness said at least 15 people were there grabbing money, though.

Police said it's not a finders-keepers situation; it's not your money to take.

Authorities obtained surveillance video from the surrounding convenience stores and were searching for several motorists.

The incident caused traffic problems in the area. A Garda spokesperson said the company could not comment until it has more details.

The reason for the spill was being investigated.
