Myrtle Beach, SC -

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A new music festival is slated to help officially open the Myrtle Beach boardwalk and promenade in May.

The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce announced the Beach Music Festival, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 15, on Ocean Boulevard between Eighth and Ninth Avenues North, is being held in conjunction with the noon ribbon-cutting that will mark the completion of the project.

The free festival will feature eight regional bands playing back-to-back on two stations, as well as performances from the National Shag Dance champions. Bands slated to perform include Ben E. King, Billy Scott & the Party Prophets, Chairmen of the Board, The Coasters, The Embers, Jim Quick & Coastline, Mark Roberts and Breeze and Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs.

Festivities also include a fireworks finale, beer sales and food, arts and crafts vendors. TLC's Cake Boss Buddy Valastro is creating a large flip-flop cake to commemorate the event.

"Pairing the Beach Music Festival with the ribbon-cutting will create and even larger draw for visitors who have been eagerly awaiting the completion of a downtown boardwalk," MBACC President/CEO Brad Dean said. "This is our first festival dedicated to beach music, and there's no better place than Myrtle Beach to showcase top-notch bands and to challenge the 'Cake Boss' to create a flip-flop cake."
