CHARLESTON, SC (AP) - A witness in the trial of a South Carolina woman who stuffed her children into trash bags after they died in a sweltering car says the defendant was a good mother.
Sametta Heyward is on trial in Charleston on charges of homicide by child abuse and illegal conduct toward a child in the July 2007 deaths of her 4-year-old son and 1-year-old daughter.
Prosecutors say Heyward left her children in her car when she went to work at a county-run group home. Authorities say temperatures in the car may have reached 130 degrees.
Family friend Latrisha Stanley testified Heyward was a good mother and the deaths were an accident.
Prosecutor Scarlett Wilson says Heyward could have asked someone to care for the children when her baby sitter canceled.
