Charleston, SC - CHARLESTON, SC (AP) - The elevators on South Carolina's most expensive bridge don't always go to the top floor, sometimes they don't go at all.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Wednesday the four elevators on the $632 million Author Ravenel Jr. Bridge between Charleston and Mount Pleasant have been very temperamental.
The state Transportation Department says the elevators in the bridge's two standing "diamonds" sometimes get stuck or don't work at all. The elevators carry bridge maintenance workers above and below the roadway.
Transportation spokesman James Law says the agency has been dissatisfied with the elevators since the bridge opened in 2005.
Specialized Engineering Products Ltd., of Canada built and installed the elevators and says the state has failed to properly maintain them.
