Myrtle Beach, SC - MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Horry County authorities have identified the man who died at Myrtle Beach International Airport after he repeatedly stabbed himself.
According to Horry County Deputy Coroner Chris Burroughs, the man has been identified as William Wesley Lewis Jr., 49. Burroughs said officials have exhausted all avenues in finding and notifying his family, but have not been able to do so.
Burroughs commented that Lewis lived in Myrtle Beach, but is originally from Alabama. The Coroner's office as asking anyone that may know his family or where in Alabama he is from to call them at 843-915-5110.
Horry County Police spokesman Sgt. Robert Kegler said authorities were alerted of an unauthorized person on the airfield at the Myrtle Beach International Airport at 10:45 a.m. Friday.
Police were dispatched to the airport after a maintenance worker found Lewis in a restricted section of the airport. As authorities responded to the scene, that's when Kegler said the man began stabbing himself.
Lewis was transported to the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center and died of his injuries 20 minutes later.
Airport officials say the man was not a passenger on a flight and have not commented on any association with Myrtle Beach International.
Transportation Security Administration officials are still investigating how Lewis accessed a remote portion of the airfield.
