Coastal lawmakers ask about tourism dollars

Hilton Head Island, SC -

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (AP) - County lawmakers on the South Carolina coast want a better idea how taxes collected from tourists are being spent.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head Island reported Tuesday that Beaufort County Council members also question the administrative costs of tourism marketing.

The county council's finance committee rejected some requests from two chambers of commerce for tax money.

The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce wants marketing money from the county but has not made a specific request after it recently received $300,000 from the town of Hilton Head Island.

County Councilwoman Laura Von Harten suggests the decision not to make a specific request could be the result of public scrutiny about chamber CEO Bill Miles' salary last year of more than $344,000.
