FMU southpaw named Pitcher of the Week; Patriots advance in poll

Josh Edgin Josh Edgin

From Francis Marion University

FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University senior left-hander Josh Edgin has been named the Peach Belt Conference "Pitcher of the Week," for the week of March 16-21.  The Patriots also moved up two spots to 11th in this week's Collegiate Baseball Magazine NCAA Division II Top 30 poll.

Edgin pitched a complete-game nine-hitter against Flagler College on Sunday as the Patriots prevailed 7-2 to win the rubber game of the PBC series.  He struck out eight batters and walked only two.  After allowing two runs in the fourth inning, he limited the Saints to five base runners over the final five innings and none advanced past second base.

The 6-2 native of Three Springs, Pa., upped his season record to 4-2 and lowered his earned run average to 3.95.

Francis Marion owns a 21-6 overall record and is tied for third place in the PBC East Division standings with a 5-4 mark.  The Patriots will play host to Barton College on Wednesday at 3 p.m. on Cormell Field.

Dating back to the 2005 season, the Patriots have appeared in 86 of the past 92 national polls.

Florida Southern College (24-3) and the University of California at San Diego (23-3) are tied for the top position in this week's poll, while six PBC squads are ranked.

Edgin was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 50th round of last year's Major League Baseball Draft, but chose to return to school for his senior year.  He is a product of Mercersburg Academy.  He played two seasons at Ohio State University before transferring to Francis Marion in 2008.  This is the second time in two seasons that he has earned a PBC Pitcher of the Week award.
