Burst gas line forces evacuation at St. James High

Murrells Inlet, SC - MURRELLS INLET, SC (WMBF) - Students at St. James High in Murrells Inlet spent part of Monday morning in the schools gym after a gas line burst outside of building.

According to Horry County Schools spokeswoman Teal Britton, the line burst near the cafeteria Monday morning at the school, located at 10800 SC-707 in Murrells Inlet. Students reported the smell of gas and told officials, who evacuated people inside to the gymnasium.

Britton said crews are working to repair the line and determine what caused it to break, adding there is no danger, and students returned to class around 8:30 a.m.

Britton noted that 37 students and one teacher went home early, feeling sick from the fumes.
