CONWAY, SC - Coastal Carolina University women's basketball pulled out a 47-46 Big South Conference win over Presbyterian on Senior Night on Monday, March 8 in Kimbel Arena. The Chanticleers finished the regular season at 16-12 and 7-9 in the Big South, while the Blue Hose ended their season 5-25 and 3-13 in the league.
The two teams battled back and forth to start the game, playing to a 7-7 tie with 13:26 remaining in the half. Senior Amanda Stull scored a lay-up, starting a 7-0 run that put the Chants up 16-9 with 5:39 left in the first stanza. The Chanticleers kept most of that margin, holding on to a 20-16 lead going into intermission. Despite keeping the lead, the Chanticleers shot just 31.8 percent (7-for-22) from the field in the first half while the Blue Hose tallied 35 percent (7-for-20) from the floor.
The Chanticleers shooting went cold to start the second half as the Blue Hose went on a 7-0 run to take a 23-20 lead less than five minutes into the final half. The teams exchanged baskets with the Blue Hose building the lead to five at 31-26 with 12:33 remaining. Coastal got things back going with an 10-2 run, re-taking the lead at 36-33 with 10:52 remaining in the game. The visiting Blue Hose would not go away, as Shonda Burnside scored six points as part of a 9-2 Blue Hose run to take back a 42-38 lead with just under seven minutes left in the game. Sophomore Olivia Irick scored the next nine Coastal points, spurring a 9-2 Coastal run that put the home squad back up 47-44 with 2:55 ticking on the clock. Presbyterian did not stop there, as Burnside hit two free-throws from the charity stripe closing within one of Coastal, 47-46, with 1:35 to play. The Chanticleer defense shut down all hopes for Presbyterian as a forced turnover in the final seconds sealed the win for Coastal.
The Blue Hose outrebounded Coastal 38-25 and outscored the hosts in the paint 28-14. Coastal's bench was key in the contest, chipping in 14 points to just four for PC's reserves. In the game, the Blue Hose shot 42.6 percent (20-for-47) from the field, as Coastal stuggled with 37.2 percent (16-for-43) from the floor. Coastal also shot a season-low 50 percent (12-for-24) from the charity stripe.
Leading the way for the Chanticleers was Irick and Sydnei Moss with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Burnside paced PC with a game-high 15 points and five rebounds. Following her was Dira David who tallied 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
