CONWAY, SC - Coastal Carolina University men's tennis topped North Carolina Central, 6-1 on Monday afternoon, March 8 at the Billy Nichols Tennis Courts.
The Chanticleers began the day sweeping doubles to earning the first point of the match. The No. 1 doubles team of juniors Peter Billingham and Matt Gordon and No. 2 doubles pair of senior Ernesto Ramos and junior Alex Funkhouser both won 8-0. Switching things up in No. 3 doubles, senior Dmitry Vlaskin and junior Dorian Sovic defeated Jose Fabara and Stephen Allsop 8-2.
In singles, the Chanticleers took five of the six matches, with the only setback at No. 5. In the No. 1 position, Gordon defeated Jack Waissen 6-2, 6-1. After moving up to No. 2 singles, Vlaskin defeated Bryan Jackson, 6-1, 6-4. Ramos defeated Alejandro Espitia in a tight match, 6-7, 6-2, 10-2, in the No. 3 singles. Funkhouser continued his winning ways, improving to 10-0 on the season after defeating Fabara 6-1, 6-4. Dorian Sovic rounded out the Coastal scoring in the No. 6 position with a convincing win over Christopher Mack 6-1, 6-1.
"We need better intensity in places," Head Coach Chris Powers said. "If we are going to our full potential, then we can't let ourselves become complacent. We have a great opponent tomorrow, and it will be interesting to see if this program is ready for that level of competition."
The Chanticleers will take on No. 42 Penn State tomorrow, Tuesday, March 9 at 3 p.m. at the Billy Nichols Tennis Courts.
