Latest road conditions update from SCDOT

Posted: Updated:

SOUTH CAROLINA (WMBF) - Crews from the South Carolina Department of Transportation continue to work in affected areas and most of the accumulation of snow, ice and slush on roadways has been removed or treated.

As temperatures rise, melting on all roads will continue. Most interstates appear to be clear, dry and passable. Travel can still be hazardous on secondary routes. The possibility of black ice is high, especially on secondary roads. Resources are being utilized in an effort to keep up with removal and freezing conditions. Available reserves of salt have been sent to the upstate.

SCDOT began working Friday around the clock in many areas of the state to keep major highways cleared from ice and snow.

As of noon Saturday, SCDOT has deployed the following:

  • 1,309 maintenance employees actively involved in road operations
  • 9,421 tons of salt
  • 2,161 tons of sand
  • 416,727 gallons of salt brine and CaCl
  • 679 snow plows, salt spreaders, sprayers and graders

SC Coastal regions and Pee Dee: Counties with accumulation are pushing snow and sanding/salting roads and bridges as needed.

Midlands: Road conditions are improving but still slushy. All counties are pushing snow and sanding/salting roads and bridges as needed.

Greenville/Spartanburg region: Counties are pushing snow and sanding/salting roads and bridges as needed on primary and secondary routes. Icing persists on secondary road in the higher elevations. The interstate is clear.

Greenwood/Laurens/Anderson/Edgefield region: Interstate roads are clear. Secondary roads and bridges are partially covered with snow and ice. All counties are pushing snow and treating those roads and bridges with sand/salt as needed. Laurens reports significant icing on road surfaces.

York/Lancaster/Cherokee region: The interstate roads are clear and dry. All counties are pushing snow and sanding/salting roads and bridges on secondary routes as needed. Most roads are covered with snow and slush.

Orangeburg/Aiken/Bamberg region: Counties are continuing to pushing snow and sanding/salting roads and bridges as needed.
