MURRELLS INLET, SC (WMBF) - You can see St. James High School senior Alex Young dancing at halftimes, intermissions and pep rallies, but you may have also seen her on national TV in front of millions of people in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
For that last kind of dance, she has some simple advice.
"Don't screw up," said Young. "One screw up is definitely noticeable especially if you're front and center."
Young certainly was front and center. She was selected for the honor at a dance camp.
"I got a lot of text messages and phone calls, like, 'Oh i saw you!' that sort of thing," said Young. "It was really cool because I wasn't expecting it."
Young, who is captain of the St. James dance team named "The Sharkies," was not selected for her dance skills alone.
"Being in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade is given to dancers who excel in leadership and leadership qualities, being that person their team can really trust and go to," said Sharkies coach Jessica Morris.
"Alex is really good at leading practice because she knows how to get things done without being mean about it, and she still knows how to have fun with us," said fellow Sharkie dancer Chelsea Bayliff.
Young says she hopes to pursue a career in dance. As her four years with St. James' dance squad comes to an end, there is a lot she knows she will miss.
"Performing and stuff like that," said Young. "Obviously I'll really miss this team. I've been on it for all four years. I love it and hopefully I will pursue it as a career."
