MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A woman in jail for animal neglect is now facing more charges after police found a dead dog and a malnourished cat at her Myrtle Beach apartment.

Ellyn Jamie Johnson, 33, is charged with her second offense of ill treatment of animals. The owner of an apartment complex at 113 River Brook Ct. noticed a foul odor and called police. Investigators found a dead bulldog and one malnourished cat inside the apartment.

"As an animal owner, I hate to see [animals abused,] said Justin Howard, who lives next door to Johnson.

Howard says animals are innocent, and can't protect themselves, which is why a crime like this angers him.

At a hearing Thursday, a judge set a personal recognizance bond at $10,000. Johnson will not have to serve additional jail time if she can come up with $1,000 to pay against her fine.

Employees at the Animal Care Center in Conway are working to treat the malnourished cat and have planned an autopsy for the deceased dog. Its cause of death, however, has not been ruled.

Johnson was sentenced on Tuesday to 10 days in jail and $1,092 in fines stemming from an arrest in July 2009. Officers were called to a home in the 100 block of Patridgeberry Road after someone reported finding two dogs dead in a crate. Johnson said the dogs were not hers.
