NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Family and friends held a funeral Monday for an 11-year-old North Myrtle Beach boy accidentally shot to death by a friend on Friday afternoon.

According to North Myrtle Beach Spokesperson Nicole Aiello, Matthew Bellamy was playing with his friend at the friend's grandmother's house in North Myrtle Beach when the incident occurred.

When the two were playing, a gun that was on a bed went off and killed Bellamy.

Bellamy was a 6th grader at North Myrtle Beach Middle School, where Principal Virginia Horton says the students and staff paused for a moment of silence Monday after the morning announcements.

Horton says the school had 16 counselors a the school to help the grieving students and teachers.

Melissa Edge's son has grown up with Bellamy. She says this loss has been difficult for the family, the community, and especially the children.

"Just seeing the reaction of those children walking out, just tears flowing down their faces," described Edge. "Sometimes death is hard enough to understand as an adult, so for a child to have to try to explain why one of their friends is laying there and won't be back at school tomorrow, it's just almost impossible for them to understand."

Edge has started a fund for Bellamy at the National Bank of South Carolina, and asks anyone who would like to help the family to donate at any NBSC branch. Donations can also be mailed to:

1423 Edge Drive
North Myrtle Beach, SC 29582

Investigators labeled the shooting as "accidental" and no charges have been filed.
