BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Former Brunswick County Sheriff Ron Hewett's prison sentence officially ended Tuesday, when he was released from a halfway house in Wilmington.

Due to good behavior, Hewett is scheduled to leave the Wilmington Community Confinement two months before the conclusion of a 16-month sentence.

Hewett was in prison after pleading guilty to an obstruction of justice charge, that stemmed from allegations that he interfered with a grand jury investigation into his department.  That investigation began in December 2006.

According to Hewett's attorney, the former sheriff plans to return to Brunswick County, where he will be on supervised probation for two years.
