MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The mysterious commenter on the Sun News website known as "Elmer Fudd" has been identified as former Myrtle Beach Mayor Mark McBride, according to the Sun News.
The Sun News spoke with Grand Strand Chamber of Commerce founder Ward Shepherd, and Shepherd says McBride confessed to being "Elmer Fudd."
Shepherd is quoted as saying his reaction was, "Oh My God... I told him to come forward. He had the opportunity to do the right thing."
The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce says "Elmer Fudd" posted false and defamatory information about them.
Back in August under the name "Elmer Fudd" someone posted comments on the Sun News website claiming the Horry County Sheriff's Office raided the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and seized computers.
The Chamber of Commerce said the comments were untrue and said they would pursue a defamation lawsuit. Through those lawsuits a judge ordered the Sun News to reveal "Fudd's" registration information.
The contact email was listed as NoAdTax@gmail.com. The Sun News is reporting the person behind the account is Mark McBride.
"I actually anticipated it would be an older guy to be quite honest," Myrtle Beach resident Brianna Gartner said.
Murrells Inlet resident Bill Koger added, "I think it was mostly politically-motivated and obviously the people spoke. He lost his election. Let it go."
Some people disagree as to how the chamber is handling the issue. Myrtle Beach resident George Jakovics says the chamber has a right to investigate, and they should.
Gartner disagrees: "I think it's gone too far."
Gartner says the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce would have acted differently had McBride won the election.
"I don't know if they would've taken it to the extent they did," he said.
Some people simply think Elmer Fudd was a publicity stunt.
"It's kind of intriguing," Jakovics said. "It's interesting reading, but it didn't get him elected. If it's him, it didn't get him elected."
Mark McBride has not returned phone calls for comment.
