MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Myrtle Beach High School has a chance to repeat as Class 3A State Champions on Saturday. One of their leaders, however, still might point to Sunday as his favorite day of the week.
Senior Morgan Byrd is this week's WMBF News Athlete of the Week. The Seahawk is a captain on the football team and very involved in the school's Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He also hosts church services at his house every Sunday.
"I play the guitar, we sing a few songs, depending on the week, some weeks I'll preach a sermon, some weeks we'll go outside and do an activity that relates to the Bible," said Byrd.
Byrd said the services have been going on for 25 to 30 weeks. He counts several teammates among his congregation.
"There can be a setting for kids who don't feel comfortable sitting in pews and listening to a choir, but there's a setting they can come with people their own age and learn about Jesus," said Byrd.
The senior also contributes all over the field. He lines up at running back, many wide receiver spots and even serves as the Seahawks' quarterback in their "Wild Hawk" package, which is similar to NFL Wildcat packages where the quarterback is a running threat.
"It makes it a lot of fun for me because each week it's a little different," said Byrd. "Just spices things up."
Byrd's contributions don't stop there. He also plays several lower profile, but still important roles to keep the Seahawks going.
"He's very versatile: he returns kicks, he's on special teams, he holds for extra points and field goals," said Myrtle Beach head coach Mickey Wilson. "He does pretty much everything."
Byrd and the Seahawks face Clinton High School Saturday evening at 6pm for the Class 3A State Title.
